The Clyde Butts-led West Indies selection panel yesterday named the same squad which failed to reach the T/20 World Cup semi-finals for the first four games in the Digicel home series against South Africa in Antigua.
Two back-to-back 20/20 matches will be played tomorrow and Thursday before the first two matches in the 5-match ODI series will bowl off on Saturday with the second one set for Monday.
Shiv Chanderpaul, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Narsingh Deonarine are the Guyanese in the squad while the much hyped up Kieron Pollard gets another chance to show his worth in West Indies colours after a string of failures, while Wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh could feel a bit unlucky to be given a look-in after the West Indies camp were forced to play musical chairs with Andre Fletcher and Denesh Ramdin who both failed with the bat.
Wavell Hinds was dropped from the 20/20 World Cup squad and no replacement was added for him as the West Indies squad for the South Africa series was reduced by one player. The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua which hosted the first ever Day/Night first class match in the West Indies between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago earlier this year will host all four games in the 108Sq Mile Island.
The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium got plenty of unwanted attention last year when the Test match between West Indies and England was called off due to the high sand content in the area of the bowler’s run up but the ground looked in excellent condition for the regional matches and was passed fit by the ICC.
A WICB official informed Kaieteur Sport that the squad was only for the Antigua leg of matches and could be changed for the two ODIs in Dominica and the final one in Jamaica.
The three-Test series starts in Jamaica on June 10 before the second Test is played in St Kitts from June 18. The final Test is scheduled for Barbados from June 26.
While the West Indies ‘A’ team will not return to the Caribbean from England until July, players like the exciting Daren Bravo who has been in prolific form with the bat for the ‘A’ team, will be available for selection and replacements sent to England for any player chosen from that squad.
The West Indies squad read:- Chris Gayle (Captain),Dwayne Bravo (Vice Captain), Sulieman Benn, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Andre Fletcher, Nikita Miller, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jerome Taylor.
Management Team: Joel Garner (Manager), Ottis Gibson (Head Coach), David Williams (Assistant Coach), C.J Clark (Physiotherapist), Hector Martinez-Charles (Strength and Conditioning Co-ordinator), Richard Berridge (Video and Statistical Analyst), Philip Spooner (Media Relations Officer), Virgil Browne (Massage Therapist)
