Manager of DDL Berbice Branch Albert Budhoo (second left) along with Marketing Assistant Alicia Anderson presents the winning DDL trophy to Steve Muthoo of the Rumour’s racing stable for Tropical Passion’s win.
– Lyana scores two wins
Tropical Passion owned by Steve Muthoo of the Rumour’s racing stable and ridden by the in-form Paul Delph showed its class after producing a blistering run down the home stretch to trash its opponent and win the feature ‘C’ class over seven furlongs and the first prize of $380,000 and The El Dorado Trophy up for grabs on Sunday at the Kennard Memorial Turf club Post Arrival Day Race Meet, at Bush Lot Farm, Corentyne.
The race started with the sprinters Sequins, Sir Balajee and the Gap setting a searing pace, blazing around the backstretch and established a marginal lead on Little Pannie and Tropical Passion, who was tucked in behind them with the confident Delph nicely poised in fourth.
As they hit the far turn, Laura Lee in Flight and Little Pannie picked up the running tracked by Tropical Passion with Little Pannie not far behind.
As they turned for home Tropical Passion and Laura Lee in Flight ridden by jockey Nervin hit the front and established a two lengths lead on Little Pannie, who was beginning to fade.
With one furlong to go, Tropical Passion and Laura Lee in Flight engaged in a ferocious battle to the post, but with the confident Delph on board he produced a strong hand ridden effort to go on to win comfortably with Laura Lee in Flight and Little Pannie having to settle for the minor positions.
Digicel’s Representative Sherwin Campbell (right) hands over the winning cheque and Digicel trophy to Mangal Ramlall owner of Stormy Water winner of the ‘I’ class race.
Madame Butterfly ridden by Nervin of the Customs tracing stable created one of the major upsets of the day when it won the F and lower Six Furlongs event from pre race favourite Pinch D Cash to take the $200,000 winners prize and the Joree trophy.
Pinch D Cash had a bad start and was slow to leave the gates as Madame Butterfly and Debatable got a good 30 meters head start.
Even with champion jockey Delph on the mount try as it may Pinch D Cash had too much to do and in the end came in second and Debatable ended third.
Pixie Fire with Nervin in the stirrups burned up the track to win the G and lower event, from Finishing Touch ridden by Kumar Singh to take home the first prize of $110,000 over 5 furlongs with Tidal Wave coming home third.
Lyana of the Barrat Stable and ridden by Delph was in a no nonsense mood as it battered its opponents into submission in winning both I class events.
First it took care of business in winning the I One Seven Furlong event and cart off $140,000 first prize and Digicel trophy ahead of Sunday Star, Tiny 21 and Miracle Silver. It was business as usual in the ‘I Three and lower 6 furlongs event which had a top prize of $130,000.
Lyana this time was too good for Miracle Silver, Diplomat and Tidal Wave.
The J&K event was won by Sunday Star of the Baker stable with Kumar Singh in control as it beat out Silver Kid, Sporting Time and Graphic. The winner’s money was worth $110,000.
Porridge of the Jagnandan stable with Delph in the stirrups was too hot to handle as it cantered to victory and away with the first prize of $100,000 in the L class race ahead of Black Beauty, Bird Stone and Native Prince. Jockey Delph copped the champion Jockey prize with Nervin being the runner-up. Tillack Dharry of the Customs stable was voted champion trainer.
They all received trophies compliments of Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.
Over 45 horses took part in the day’s activity which had total prize monies of over $2.5 million up for grabs.
