Residents of Albouystown were treated to an all day boxing card when the management of Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) in collaboration the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) staged a boxing card that consisted of boxers from gyms countrywide.
A record total of 78 boxers crowded the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis boxing gym all geared up for the fistic encounters but sadly, 10 of these boxers were unable to don gloves because of the volume of fights.
The huge crowd that turned up at the venue enjoyed every bout but the space constraint prevented all of the patrons from getting a clear view and many were left outside of the crammed building. Gyms from as far as Essequibo to Berbice competed in the tournament that also attracted participation from the Timerhi Boxing Gym.
President of the GABA, Steve Ninvalle was especially heartened by the responses and commended the organizers, Sebert Blake and Wensel Thomas for their dedication and commitment towards the success of the venture.
Delivering brief remarks before the action got underway Ninvalle said that the future looks bright for amateur boxing. “We are fortunate to witness a sneak preview of what is in store for boxing fans a few months down the line,” Ninvalle exhorted. The GABA President adumbrated that the overwhelming response of the public endorses the belief of his executives that there is a wealth of boxing talent waiting to be unearthed. “And we intend to nurture this talent to the hilt,” he concluded.
Mr. Ninvalle was also appreciative of the assistance received from some members of the corporate community and singled out businessman, Kerwin Chase who, despite the late request acquiesced to the provision of refreshment for all of the participants.
The following gyms participated in the tournament, Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF), Harpy Eagles (HE), Essequibo Boxing Gym (ESQ) Timerhi Warriors (TW) Ricola) (Ric), Young Achievers (YA), Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ), and New Amsterdam (NA).
