Defending champions Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United have ended the first round of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League sponsored by FIFA under the Win in CONCACAF with CONCACAF Project on pole position.
‘The Hammer’ has nailed all their opponents to the extent that they are the only unbeaten team in the 10-team league to date; it will take some doing by the opposing teams to defeat Alpha, many have come close but squandered their chances of softening the Hammer. They have accumulated 23 points from their 9 matches.
Berbice based Rosignol United are in second on 17 points and along with Alpha, cannot be overtaken; at least not in the first round. At the bottom of the table with a single win from 8 matches is West Demerara’s Seawall FC, they cannot make it into the top 8.
GDF, currently occupying the 3rd position along with Buxton, Milerock and Victoria Kings are certain of making the top 8 list with two more places remaining. Sunburst Camptown, Bakewell Topp XX and Liquid Gold of Bartica are in contention for the two spots.
The top eight teams from the first round will be facing off in a knock-out tournament prior to action resuming in the second and final round.
If Camptown are able to get past Topp XX and Liquid Gold then they will be able to rack up 16 points and end in the 3rd place.
Topp XX will then have to beat Seawall which will take them to 10 points.
If however Liquid Gold take care of Camptown and Topp XX also beat Camptown and lose to Seawall all 3 teams will end on 10 points; the goal difference will then have to be taken into account to separate the teams. Currently, Camptown’s goal difference is zero, Topp XX has a -5 and Liquid Gold is -7.
This weekend promises lots of excitement since the teams at the bottom will be vying to stay alive and make it into the top eight to get a chance to play in the knock-out competition which is set for the latter half of July.
In latest play, Bakewell Topp XX edged Buxton 3-2, Rosignol United won by a similar margin against Victoria Kings while Milerock defeated Liquid Gold 3-1.
The final three matches of the first round will be played on Saturday.
