– party alleges political harassment
Top executives of the Alliance For Change (AFC) are alleging political harassment after police ranks raided a Queenstown building owned by businessman Peter Ramsaroop, the party’s Chief Executive Officer.
Ramsaroop told Kaieteur News that police conducted the search around noon, yesterday, shortly after he had returned from Barbados.
He said that the ranks seized several computers from the building, located at Forshaw and New Garden Streets, Queenstown.
A similar search was also conducted at Ramsaroop’s Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara home.
The AFC official also confirmed that he was questioned at CID headquarters for about six hours before being released on $20,000 station bail.
He is being represented by attorney-at-law and leader of the People’s National Congress Robert Corbin, who described as “farcical”, the allegations being made against his client.
Ramsaroop said that the raid stemmed from allegations that he was filming pornography and was downloading the images on the internet.
He said that the allegations had been made by a former female tenant of the Queenstown premises, whom he recently served notice to move.
“The accusation is that I am transmitting camera information onto the web of people in the apartment.”
Refuting the allegations, Ramsaroop told Kaieteur News that there are several wires in the building for security cameras that were installed on the premises when he had conducted business there.
He said that he now rents out the apartments and the cameras have been removed.
Suggesting that the incident was politically motivated, the AFC official charged that the raid stemmed from recent remarks that he had made about a prominent political figure.
According to Ramsaroop, the political figure is an associate of the former tenant who had made the allegation against him.
“I think that it is a politically motivated move to tackle me for my comments.”
He said that his innocence will be easily proven once a proper investigation is carried out.
AFC co-leader Raphael Trotman also charged that the party was being deliberately targeted.
“To me, it’s rampant political persecution, and we have been receiving information that the senior leadership will be targeted,” he said.
“It’s a continued pattern of harassment and more is yet to come. This is the dark, ugly side of politics in Guyana. “
Weighing in on the matter, Ramsaroop’s attorney Robert Corbin said he found it strange that the police would place his client on station bail while continuing investigations into allegations that were “farcical.”
“The allegations are farcical and wild and appear to be politically directed, but we will wait for what the police have to say on the matter.
