A great spectacle of skill and determination was seen on Day two of the 2010 Woodpecker Products sponsored National Junior Squash Championships, with the top two matches of the night taking place in the Under-19 category.
The first between Alex Arjoon and Jason Ray Khalil started off with a brutal test of will and concentration as the two battled to a score of 19-17 which is rarely seen in the world of squash.
The game concluded due to a critical error by Arjoon as he lost focus at the last moment with a poor shot selection, which allowed Khalil to capitalise and win the grudge game. In the following two games in near identical fashion Arjoon fought back from a 4 points deficit and accelerated when it mattered most to win them both 11-8, 11-8.
The fourth and final game was full of drama as Khalil won the first 5 points, leaving Arjoon again with a large deficit, the two-time Caribbean Champ then showed his ability to win 11 straight points, a true feat of superior skill to close out the match 11- 5.
Final Score: Alex Arjoon bt Jason Khalil 19-17, 11-8, 11-8, 11-5.
It was then the ladies’ turn as long time rivals and good friends Kayla Jeffrey and Ashley Khalil took to the court and proceeded to play the most exciting match of the tournament to date.
It started off in the usual fast pace fashion with the athletic Jeffrey dictating the pace of the rallies and Khalil doing most of the retrieving.
After withstanding her opponent’s early onslaught, Khalil started working the ball around the court and slowly took control to end the first 11-9.
The second started similarly to the first, but this time around Jeffrey managed to sustain her aggression and close out the game 11-8.
Jeffrey seemed to be running away with the third, but once again Khalil used her superior court craft to outwit her opponent and steal the third 13-11.
In years past, losing such a close game would usually cause Jeffrey to crumble, but this time around she came out in the fourth with a new sense of determination, rarely seen before and took the fight to her opponent.
She played to her strength by staying with her up tempo fast pace game to shock her opponent 11-5 and 11-6 in the last two games.
The action continues today and tomorrow at the Georgetown Club courts with the final two rounds of the competition.
