The inclement weather coupled with other unfortunate factors had contrived to force several postponements of the Mayor’s Cup football tournament but now that the rains have abated somewhat, the tournament will resume this Sunday with an exciting double header.
In the first match starting at 18:00hrs, Santos FC tackle Seawall FC while two giants, BK Intl. Western Tigers and Fruta Conquerors go head to head in the feature match that nets the winner bragging rights and a semi-final place in the competition.
Santos would fancy its chances of qualifying for the next stage and would be fielding a competitive team with the likes of former Guyana goalkeeper and U-20 captain, Shemroy Arthur who is now marshalling the midfield position. Add forwards William Europe and Kasi John plus the tough defender Trevor Lewis and the pundits would want to place their money on the Santos squad.
That may be so but Seawall FC would also be nurturing great ambitions of progressing to the semi-final round. They may just be able to qualify if captain of the team and a tough middle back, Delon Josiah gets going. He could also depend on support from midfielder, Gordon Lewis and forward Cleveland Walcott. The possibility of a victory is a very likely preposition if defender Toine Lopes ticks on that day.
If the first match is a thriller, the second is a humdinger. Western Tigers have developed a new work ethic ever since carting off the honours in the Kashif and Shanghai extravaganza earlier this year. Several administrative challenges were quickly rectified and the Tigers are prepared to display the fighting propensities of the animal they have been christened after.
Sherman David, the captain and middle back leads their charge with
competent support from strikers Gavin Wilson and Dwayne Ali. With Nedd Fraser and Maxwell Pellew marshalling the midfield position it would take a lot to deny them from progressing to the semi-finals stage.
Conquerors star striker, Manasseh Primo is reportedly in Suriname and would be sorely missed but the ‘Juice Men’ would want to shrug aside this eventuality and focus on a decisive win.
They would depend heavily on Neville Stanton in the mid back position and Delon Williams at midfield. Mustapha Haqq and Jomo Hinds in the forward positions may also present some worries for the Tigers.
A fierce and competitive double header is in the making and the organizers have said that irrespective of the weather the matches would go on. Football fans would not want to miss this treat. Kick off time is 18:00hrs sharp.
