Local car racer Kevin Jeffrey in an interview with Kaieteur Sport yesterday said he believes that the current team selected to represent Guyana in the opening leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Series is one of the best to come out of Guyana for sometime and they are all confident of doing well.
“The team is a very good one and perhaps the best for sometime to come out of Guyana and we are confident of gaining positive results,” Jeffrey told this newspaper from his location in Duncan Street.
He pointed out that event though all of the drivers will be engaged in fierce battles for outstanding individual performances, what is best for Team Guyana will override individual ambitions.
“What will come first is Team Guyana, it has been a long time since we haven’t won the overall title and our aim is to perform to the level where Guyana regains its former dominance on the regional circuit,” Jeffrey asserted.
Touching on his preparations and the status of his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII, the former motor bike champion disclosed that initially they suffered a slight hiccup where they imported a new engine from Central Florida Turbo (CFT), but had to abort the installation process due to insufficient time.
“We had to revert to the old engine, but we are not worried because it worked well during the last Meeting so everything should still be fine,” he stated.
According to Jeffrey, the new engine was more straightway biased and that might have given them a bit of a disadvantage, while the old engine was originally out of Jamaica since Doug Gore was the previous owner and it was built for that track.
“It is suited for that sort of track and we are still very confident that we will be very competitive come race day,” Jeffrey contended.
He informed that the Dover Speedway is a combination of hair pins and hill climbing so there is the need for a lot of torque to be successful there.
He added that physically and mentally he is ready for the challenge and it is just a matter of getting into the country early enough to get in some valuable seat time which they are hoping to achieve.
Jeffrey pointed out that the development of the car is continuing and even though the process is a bit slower than anticipated, they are pretty satisfied with what they’ve been able to achieve so far. The team is scheduled to depart next Wednesday, while the machines have already been shipped.
