Under the theme “Towards a new phase of the bi-regional association: innovation and technology for sustainable development and social inclusion”, more than 60 Heads of States and Government, including several from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Caribbean Forum of African Caribbean and Pacific (CARIFORUM) States, will meet with their counterparts from Europe in Madrid, Spain next week for the Sixth Summit of the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean (EULAC).
According to a statement from the CARICOM Secretariat, the EULAC Summit, slated for May 18, will provide a platform on which both regions will endeavour to forge common approaches to a global agenda which includes critical issues of environment, climate change and energy; international financial architecture, education and migration; science, technology and innovation; peace and security and trafficking in illicit drugs.
It is expected that the summit will produce a declaration on innovation and technology which can support sustainable development and social inclusions and addressing other critical global issues. It will also address EU-LAC relations and a concrete action plan based on the central theme of the Summit which will also identify future projects eligible for financing.
Within the margins of the Summit, a slate of related meetings will be held with specific LAC countries and sub-regions. Chief among these meetings for CARICOM Member States is the CARIFORUM – EU Summit on Monday May 17 in which the dialogue will focus on issues including a joint strategy outlining a vision for future partnership with the European Union; regional integration and cooperation for sustainable and economic development and natural disasters, with the post-Haiti crisis being the centrepiece of this discussion.
CARICOM Secretary-General His Excellency Edwin Carrington, who is also the Secretary-General for CARIFORUM, is in Spain and yesterday he addressed the opening ceremony of a two-day meeting of Social Security Ministers from Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean treating with the topic: Social Security Systems Coordination.
That meeting will be followed on Sunday by EU-LAC Meeting of Ministers of Development under the theme: Fighting Climate Change: An opportunity for Development.
The EU-LAC Business Summit of Confederations of Employers and Industries meeting will also open on Sunday. This pre-summit meeting will bring together partners from a range of sectors, such as trade unions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), members of parliament from both regions, and academics, as well as governments.
On Monday, Caribbean Ministers of Foreign Affairs will join with their counterparts in Latin America in a meeting with the European Union in which the primary subject of discussion will be on bi-regional EU-LAC partnership in a globalised world.
