A thick pool of congealed blood remained the stark reminder of a gruesome accident that occurred on Sir David Rose Avenue, Mackenzie, Linden, shortly after 6 pm Monday evening which left one man dead and another in police custody.
The victim, Eze Austin of Amelia’s Ward, was reportedly on his way home on his motorcycle, CF 3114, when he slammed into a parked truck, GMM 4714.
The driver of the truck, Bhan Pearson, said that he had stopped briefly to make a purchase at a nearby shop, when upon reentering the vehicle he heard a loud noise and felt an impact from the rear of the vehicle.
Upon investigating a man was observed spreadeagled on the road, behind the truck with blood gushing from his head; his motorcycle was under the truck.
Though there were no eyewitnesses, speculation is rife that Austin may have been blinded by an uncoming vehicle, and subsequently slammed into the back of the truck as a result.
A resident who lives close by but declined to give her name, said that after she heard the impact she ran out to see what it was, and saw the man lying in a pool of blood, with his forehead bashed in and his motorcycle under the truck.
Curious onlookers who quickly converged on the scene, said the man lived alone, as his relatives resided overseas, and one woman who claimed to be a good friend said that she had last seen Austin on Saturday, when he visited her home.
According to the woman, Veronica Thom, Austin had gone to Georgetown earlier in the day (Monday), and had apparently gone into the village (Mackenzie) to purchase supplies for his dinner. It was on his way back home that he met his demise.
His friend Veronica held onto his helmet which had a few of the man’s personal effects, as she reminisced sadly on the last time she saw him.
‘’Is Saturday was the last time ah see he, and he lef about midnight, now he dead’’,
Another tearful female related that Austin was a close friend who visited her family on a daily basis.
News of his death was indeed shocking for the amily, she reported.
Other reports indicated that Austin was looking forward to an impending reunion with a son who resides overseas. However, instead, the grim news of his death was what was relayed to his family shortly after the tragedy.
The truck which Austin slammed into was described as a bush truck, and had fuel drums onboard.
Shortly after the accident, it was towed away to the Mackenzie Police Station, with the mangled motorcycle in the back.
The driver of the truck was subsequently taken into custody.
