Liquid Gold and Rosignol United were the only two teams to register victories over Seawall FC and Milerock by a 2-0 and 3-2 margins at the Uitvlugt and Blairmont Community Centre grounds respectively as play in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super League continued on Sunday last.
Unbeaten defending champions and points leaders Alpha United and city counterparts GDF both earned 1 point each along with Victoria Kings and Sunburst Camptown following a 0-0 and 1-1 draw respectively at the GFC ground, Bourda. While over on the Enmore Community Centre ground, the inclement weather prevented play in the match between Buxton United and Bakewell Topp XX.
Devon Forde after 8 minutes had put Camptown ahead 1-0 in the feature match of the doubleheader at the GFC. However, in the 32nd minute Anthony Abrams accounted for Alpha’s equalizer, and with no additional goals materializing the first half ended 1-1 which was a similar situation at the end of regulation time.
However, Camptown’s custodian Maurice Prince effected 2 brilliant saves to deny Alpha before the interval. Upon the resumption both teams continued their battle for midfield dominance but outstanding goalkeeping from both custodians denied either team from establishing a lead.
Alpha’s Ronson Williams tipped a powerfully struck right footer over the cross-bar for a corner in one instance. While Camptown’s Richie Richards a second-half substitute proved his worth aerially with the incoming crosses.
Captain and central defender Howard Lowe was denied by the under bar with his spot kick from the penalty spot, midway in the second segment which would have given Alpha its first lead. Alpha were made to toil harder following the expulsion of Jamaican Oneke Ford in the 80th minute.
With their first draw in 8 matches Alpha have progressed to 22 points, following by the 2nd place Rosignol United on 13, third is GDF with 12; occupying the 4th spot in Victoria Kings ahead of the 5th place Buxton United by a superior goal difference, both teams on 11 points, while Sunburst Camptown lead Liquid Gold by a superior goal difference for the 7th position. Both teams have 7 points each.
Bakewell Topp XX is currently in the penultimate spot with 4 points and occupying the cellar is Seawall FC with 3 points.
Super League action continues today with 2 matches at the GFC ground, Bourda.
