Mercy Hospital fire…
One day after fire of unknown origin destroyed the oldest wing of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, the institution is still providing most of its services out of the Guyana Red Cross Headquarters’ building.
Assistant Administrator of the Hospital Ms. Marjorie Park in an invited comment yesterday said that they have not yet been able to find accommodation for all of their private doctors. However, most of them are offering their services at the Red Cross Office. In the meantime, Ms. Park explained that most of the patients are resting at the Davis Memorial Hospital. According to the official, it is expected by weekend that the patients should be back at the Mercy Hospital’s wards.
“Right now we are doing some cleaning up and we hope that by the weekend or before we would be able to move back our patients.”
She further noted that the fire did not do any damage to the wards of the hospital, thanks to the efforts of the Guyana Fire Service.
In the meantime she advised that the public can contact the hospital on its regular switchboard numbers during regular office hours for now.
She added that the numbers are only available from 08:00 hours to 16:00 hours.
On Monday, fire gutted the main building in the hospital’s compound. All 32 patients including 4 newborns were safely evacuated from the building which housed the various wards at the hospital
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle did indicate that so far they have been able to establish that the fire started in a room next to a doctor’s office.
Meanwhile the hospital’s administration has expressed its gratitude to the Guyana Fire Service, the Guyana Police Force and the Minister of Health Dr. Leslie Ramsammy who has pledged government’s support in whatever way possible.
