The Guyana Women’s National Hockey Team received a welcome boost to their fund-raising efforts as Digicel kindly presented them with a Blackberry Gemini phone to be used as one of the prizes for their upcoming fund-raising raffle, at the Company’s Head Office in Kingston yesterday.
According to a release Digicel has been associated with the team as far back as 2005 when they operated as U-Mobile Inc.
Digicel Sales Manager Dwayne Scott in brief comments said that the company recognises the efforts of the ladies and is pleased to be associated with them.
Senior team members Tricia Fiedtkou and Avonda James, who were both on-hand for the presentation, expressed gratitude towards Digicel for their consistency and willingness to support the team.
They disclosed that the phone will enhance the raffle and contribute to its success.
The raffle is expected to be launched in one week and the drawing is to be held on June 25th during the team’s Family Fun Day fund-raising event.
Meanwhile, the team has been forced to move indoors since the rainy season has made the grounds unavailable.
Training is being conducted four days per week at the National Gymnasium.
Guyana Hockey Board President Phillip Fernandes intimated that the current inclement weather has caused a bit of a setback to training and the commencement of the season which was anticipated to begin soon.
He added that the focus now has shifted to perfecting artificial turf skills since the concrete surface of the gymnasium plays more similarly to an artificial turf than natural grass.
Fernandes also informed that the team has been invited by the Trinidad and Tobago Hockey Federation to visit for the weekend of May 28-30 to conduct training sessions and play matches on their artificial turf. Since the hockey competition of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games which the team is preparing for will be held on artificial turf, it is critical for the Guyanese players to be exposed to the surface.
While in Trinidad, the team is expected to train in the mornings and play matches against special selections in the evening. Trinidad, who is also expected to compete in the CAC Games, is ranked #1 for the tournament, while Guyana is positioned at #8 out of as many teams.
