Guyana’s ‘Lady Jags’ got off their quest for Gold Cup qualification on a positive note in the twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago last evening when they scaled the Ladies from the Land of the Flying Fish, Barbados, 3-0.
Like the Guyanese ladies, Barbados had won their group with respective 3-0 and 4-0 wins over Anguilla and Grenada on March 28 and April 1, 2010 but coming up against the ‘Lady Jags’ who disposed of Suriname and St. Vincent & the Grenadines also in March of this year, would have always been a different proposition.
And while the Guyanese team were not totally impressive in the way they played, they did enough to take full points and inch closer to qualification for the CAC Games in Puerto Rico in July and qualification for the final stage of the Gold Cup qualifying competition which will see the first and second placed teams from the groups in T&T advancing.
No time was wasted in taking the lead with forward Mariam EL-Masri finishing off brilliant work set up by Alison Heydorn and Captain Ashley Rodrigues.
Barbados though, looked a good unit possessing the ball more than the Guyanese whose technical and tactical style of play proved to be the undoing of their opponents.
Central defender Daria Owen and the very positive and solid goal keeper Tenyka Francique did their part at the back with the other defenders by communicating consistently to ensure the others kept their focus in the game.
A few chances went by the way side in the game which started in pouring rain which subsided in about the 20th minute.
Goal number two came in the 37th minute when Captain Ashley Rodrigues belted a sweet right foot shot from a squared ball on the right side provided by the hard working right back, Nikita Persaud who passed the ball in the attacking third to underline her level of fitness and work ethic.
El-Misri could have made it goal number three minutes later but missed an easy chance at the near post. She was replaced 4 minutes later by Ashlee Savona in the 42nd minute as no other goals were scored before the half way mark.
The second half saw a much improved performance by the Jags who possessed the ball more as they controlled play against the Bajans whose appearance in the attacking third were very minimal and when they did, their efforts on goal did not bother custodian Francique, Guyana still to concede a goal in this qualifying competition.
Substitute Savona was alert enough to capitalize on a half hearted attempt by the Bajan keeper to save a ball squared across their goal. Savona’ eyes lit up as the ball eluded the grasp of Kamillah Burke to hit it into the open goal.
Thereafter, the play was dictated by Guyana who made substitutions in the 59th minute when Jordanna Phillips was introduced at the expense of Collette Hope who suffered an injury. EL-Marsi went out in the 83rd minute to make way for Donna Carvalhal.
A good performance by Guyana but not too pleasing to Technical Director Mark Rodrigues who said whilst the victory was good, the way it was achieved was not at all pleasing.
“We will have to tighten up in a few areas ahead of our next game and be more positive in our attacking to take care of St. Lucia and then our final game against Trinidad on Friday.”
Trinidad and Tobago dominated their clash against St. Lucia who they beat 7-1
