‘Wings of Desire’ screens today at the National Gallery
Wings of Desire
German director, Wim Wenders’s ‘Wings of Desire’, which won him the Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1987, is the Classic Tuesdays film to be presented today at the National Gallery.
The plot surrounds Damiel (Bruno Ganz), an angel in modern day Berlin who is visible only to children. With his divine power he witnesses and guides the lives of people in countless ways but longs to experience the vividness of human emotions. When he sees a beautiful but lonely trapeze artist (Solveig Dommartin) he desperately tries to be seen by her and to be a part of her life.
He is faced with the agonising choice of experiencing love and life as a human being but immediately and forever losing his eternal power to do good.
Bruno Ganz, leading German actor of the 80’s and 90’s, plays a role in great contrast to that of his character the Count in April’s Classic Tuesdays costume drama, ‘The Marquise of O’.
Wenders, winner of the top awards at the Venice and Cannes Film Festivals in 1982 and 1984, co-wrote his script with avant-garde German playwright Peter Handke.
The film is strikingly shot with dramatic camera angles and in both black and white and colour, to reflect the different states of existence of angels, living in eternity, and human beings, living an often painful but vividly experienced life.
Initially a painter, and also a playwright and writer, Wenders was awarded an honorary doctorate from the Sorbonne in 1989. He was awarded Best Director at the Bavarian Film Awards in 1987 and 1993 and was honoured by the Locarno International Film Festival in 2005. The running time is 2 hours 8 minutes. Admission is free.
