Dear Editor,
In his column of May 4, Freddie Kissoon suggested that PNC and Opposition Leader Mr. Robert Corbin “got conned” by President Jagdeo in not pursuing violent militant confrontation against the government to achieve his goals. Kissoon saluted Desmond Hoyte for his violent approach against the PPP government forcing it on its knees to make concessions to the opposition. Kissoon feels that had Corbin emulated the “Hoyteian approach” bringing Georgetown to its knees, engulfed in flames, the PPP would have to cave in to the demands of the opposition.
I disagree. Many Guyanese I have spoken with in NY don’t understand why a writer like Kissoon would encourage a party or its leader to pursue violence to bring down a democratically elected government.
Kissoon applied Shakespearean MacBeth in his analysis to argue for violence against the government in order to force concessions from Jagdeo. I debunked Kissoon’s very MacBethian argument last October in Kaieteur News and will not delve into another analysis of MacBeth. He does not understand MacBeth.
Kissoon is off-base in calling on Mr. Corbin to engage in violence against fellow Guyanese. Corbin has pursued the right (non-violent) strategy in seeking to bring about change and history would be kind to him unlike his predecessors who used violence and intimidation with the goal of winning over supporters. The business community wants peace, not violence.
While Hoyte succeeded with “slo fire/mo fire” in wringing concessions from the late President Janet Jagan and President Jagdeo on electoral matters, he did not win over support for his candidacy. In fact, he lost votes in each succeeding election. The violence against businesses and Indians accompanied with allegations of rape and countless robberies did not benefit the opposition. Indians felt they could not trust the opposition.
With the peaceful period from 2004 till now, the opposition has been winning over hearts and minds. If it slips back into a violent mode, a recovery of political support would be virtually impossible.
Mr. Kissoon well knows that Indians suffered enormously whenever “slo fire, mo fire and gyam fire” were invoked and they did not cast ballots for the opposition. This drives them straight into the ruling party’s camp. So why Kissoon would even suggest a violent approach against the government is beyond any sane person’s comprehension. Any political idiot would know that violence would not win over Indians whose cross-over votes are necessary for the opposition to win an election.
