‘Lady Jags’ confident ahead of Barbados clash
Guyana’s flagship female football team ‘Lady Jags’ is a positive unit going into game one of the Second Round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup qualifying competition set for the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, Trinidad and Tobago today.
The Guyanese side which touched down in the Twin Island Republic on Saturday evening just after 23:00hrs held a training session at the Savannah yesterday afternoon since no other grounds were available.
While the quality of the Savannah leaves much to be desired, the Guyanese lasses went through their paces seeing the situation as another challenge and hurdle to cross. The Barbados and St. Lucia teams also had to utilise the Savannah for training.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport, Technical Director Mark Rodrigues said the mood in the camp is very high with his charges positive of creating more history for their country.
“They are in a great mood and this is one of the benefits of having a full week’s camp and not a rushed camp over three days. The girls got a chance to bond last week even more and they really worked hard in pushing themselves and each other.”
“When we played our last practice game you could have seen the competitiveness and focus was very high to the point that the other team was drained in the last 20 to 25 minutes because we were still competing at a high level.”
Regarding the make up of the team for this afternoon’s encounter, which kicks off at 17:00hrs, Rodrigues said the style of play will differ from the Group One games which Guyana hosted and won against Suriname (2-0) and St. Vincent & the Grenadines, 1-0.
“Now we have gotten certain other key players back into the group, defender Daria Owen and goalkeeper Tenyka Francique who saved in the Goodwill tournament we had in Guyana.”
Rodrigues noted that the focus of the team is to defend through attack while some of the players would be shifted around noting that they have learnt from some of the things they did back in the March phase of the competition.
The starting eleven: Ashley Rodrigues, Alison Heydorn, Miriam Al Masri, Brittany Persaud, Kayla De Souza, Justine Rodrigues, Collette Hope, Brianna De Souza, Daria Owen and Nikita Persaud with Tenyka Francique in goal.
Training this morning from 09:30hrs will take place at the Marvin Lee Stadium while this evening’s feature match will see Trinidad and Tobago facing St. Lucia from 19:00hrs, with Guyana against Barbados setting the tone at 17:00hrs.
