A special Mother’s Day gift
A few mothers got special presents yesterday as they received their tiny, squirming bundles of joy at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. According to the Midwife-in-charge of the Post Natal Ward, the first baby born on Mother’s Day was a girl, and she was delivered by 28-year-old Samantha Thomas at 4:00 hrs. Samantha said that this was her second daughter, her first was delivered eight years ago. This time however, she actually hit the Mother’s Day jackpot since her first daughter whose birthday is in a few days, barely missed the chance to be a Mother’s Day baby.

The second baby, a boy, came along at 06:22 hours to 22-year-old Dacia Niles.
It was also her second baby. In another strange quirk, Dacia’s first child, a boy as well, came along on another interesting day, according to her –the last Elections Day.
The lucky mothers at the hospital went through a gamut of reactions as they expressed their excitement, joy, relief and gratitude. One mother claimed that she felt, “blessed beyond measure” to have been given such a gift. While another just couldn’t stop smiling as she looked down at her son.
According to the Midwife on duty, GPHC had three babies and their mothers in Post Natal Care, while there were two more in recovery from Cesarean Section. One boy had just been delivered at the time this report was taken and was still in the Labour Room while the nurses felt that at least one more baby would enter the world before the day closed. The Midwife also noted that there were visits earlier in the day to all of the mothers in the ward from Cheekies and Teddies, delivering hampers with supplies for the newborns.
All told, there were about nine Mother’s Day babies delivered at various hospitals around the city. These included twins for one lucky mother at the Georgetown Medical Centre. There were also two more babies expected during the course of the evening.
