Amateur boxer Ray Sandiford has been handed a two month suspension from all activities held under the auspices of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) following the first meeting of the Disciplinary Committee of the new executive, held last week.
According to GABA President Steve Ninvalle, the committee which comprises himself, Vice President Eustace Cuffy, Assistant Secretary Treasurer Keith Campbell and Treasurer Dexter Patterson, summoned Sandiford and his coach James Walcott to the meeting, but only Walcott turned up. Director of tournaments Terrence Poole was also present at the meeting.
The summons stemmed from Sandiford’s non appearance at the weigh in and subsequent fight against Stephan Gouveia in the recently staged Pro Am boxing card. Ninvalle informed that the disciplinary action was in regard to his nonappearance on both counts. His coach James Walcott was reprimanded over his boxer’s actions.
Kaieteur Sport has been informed that efforts were made to contact Sandiford following his no show at the weigh in for the fight and he informed that he was injured but failed to contact a GABA affiliated Doctor to look at his injury.
Ninvalle noted that the boxer’s action, even though was his first offence, was a blatant disregard for the rules set out. He pointed out that GABA will not tolerate acts of indiscipline by any member, whether executive, boxer or coach, and defaulters will be dealt with condignly. The GABA boss stated that indiscipline is a serious problem and if not dealt with expeditiously can spread like cancer and his entire executive will not allow this.
The Suspension on Sandiford started Friday.
