Following an earnest appeal by coach of the Enmore Athletics Club, John Martins, for help to offset the expenses of one of his charges, Kenneth Semple’s journey to Trinidad and Tobago to participate in several international meets has been made possible when the management of Toolsie Persaud Ltd responded by donating more than $100,000 toward the trip.
Yesterday morning, at the Company’s Sussex Street, LaPenitence office, one of the Company’s managers, Mohan Harnanan handed over the cheque to Semple’s coach in the presence of media operatives and other employees of the firm.
Mr. Harnanan said that his company is always happy to render assistance to local athletes and quickly responded when Mr. Martins requested such help. He reminded of similar assistance rendered by his company in the past stating that only last year they had donated to another athlete Ricardo Martin who went on to win a gold medal at the Junior Carifta games in St Lucia. “The executives of Toolsie Persaud Ltd were especially pleased with the performance of this athlete and we unhesitatingly acquiesced to continued support,” reiterated Mr. Harnanan. The Company Manager then urged Semple to give of his best.
Coach, John Martins responded on behalf of his athlete. He thanked Mr. Harnanan for the gift and assured him that his charge would work diligently to win medals at the various events. “We have approached Toolsie Persaud on many occasions in the past and notwithstanding the grave economic constraints affecting the business community, they have never turned us down,” said Mr. Martins as he expressed gratitude for the financial assistance.
Semple leaves Guyana on May 12 to participate in several meets starting with the Mannie Ramjohn Games and culminating with the Hampton Games from July 2-4. In between those meets, he will compete in the Brooklyn Games, scheduled for May 29 and 30, Morvant Jets Games, scheduled to get underway between June19 and 20 and the Trinidad and Tobago National Senior championships scheduled for June 25-27. John Martins will accompany him as his coach.
