“Zinc sheets torn off and a leaking roof, clogged drains and a sign that will injure or kill children” these were the concerns expressed by parents and a teacher of St Paul’s Primary School in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.
According to a teacher, the school has written letters and made phone calls to the Ministry of Education of a rattling zinc sheet months ago; however there has been no response from the Ministry.
The teacher explained that the rattling zinc sheet blew off two weeks ago. It was an issue months before. It was feared it would have been ripped off by the wind and blown in the direction of students and hurt them terribly.
The teacher further revealed that the steady downpour of rain affects children from the top to bottom of the school, and the ceiling of the lower flat of the school is starting to rot.
“There is also a sign in front of the school that will fall on a student and hurt them horribly.”
According to one student, the children will go under the sign and turn on the pipe to use water, without realising the danger of the rotting and slanting sign. “It will fall and hurt someone soon.”
According to a parent, the drains around the school is another issue.
They are silted up and create an unhealthy situation for children. While one of the gates is being held up by a makeshift bicycle tube and pieces of boards to hold the hinges in place.
The Ministry of Education said that no one can give a comment to the media without the permission of the Permanent Secretary. The Permanent Secretary and the Minister of Education were in a meeting.
