Six athletes from the Enmore Athletics Club, Enmore ECD are scheduled to leave the country shortly for the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago to compete in two athletic meets— the Mannie Ramjohn Games and the Hampton International Games, scheduled for that country from May 12-July 5 next.
Those selected for duty are Malcolm Walcott, Keith Gordon, Colin Belgrave and Ornesto Thomas.
Another athlete of the Enmore based club, Kenneth Semple will leave on May 12 to participate in several meets starting with the Mannie Ramjohn Games and culminating with the Hampton Games from July 2-4. In between those meets, Semple will compete in the Brooklyn Games, scheduled for May 29 and 30, Morvant Jets Games, scheduled to get underway between June19 and 20 and the Trinidad and Tobago National Senior championships scheduled for June 25-27.
John Martins will accompany the squad in the capacity of coach. He explained that Semple would be using these meets in preparation of the Central American and Caribbean Games scheduled for Puerto Rico in mid July.
While in Trinidad, Semple will undergo training sessions at the Rebirth Athletic Club under the tutelage of Mr. Ashwood Greed and Mr. Richard Ross, two competent coaches that had guided Olympians Richard Thompson and Darrell Brown to the upper echelons of the sport.
The Enmore Athletics Club has a commendable record of accomplishment at these games, spearheaded by Ricardo Martin’s silver medal achievement in the Boys U-17 fifteen hundred meters at last year’s St Lucia held Carifta Games.
He also competed in the World Youth Championships in Italy but with little success.
Even before Martin’s achievement, another athlete of the Enmore based club, Calvin Belgrave, copped gold in the Boys U-13, four hundred meters while Semple had narrowly missed the 2007 Junior Pan America championships qualifying time. He had clocked 10.6secs as against the qualifying time of 10.5secs in the Boys U-20 hundred meters race. His pet events are the 100M and 200M distances.
Meanwhile, coach of the team, John Martins is appealing to the business community to assist the athletes to compete at the Games.
He said that while he has received some support there is still a need for additional assistance.
The team is currently undergoing stiff training in preparations for the games.
