The shopping trend on the Essequibo Coast is vastly improving as more Essequibians are now exposed to the accessibility of acquiring products from supermarkets. The new commissioning of the Bacchus Supermarket is one testimony to the transformation, portraying the new way of life for the average Essequibian.
Imam Bacchus, who has emerged as a household name, has commissioned at $400 M supermarket oblique to what was the general store at Affiance.
The modern facility also caters for both disabled persons who are confined to wheelchairs and pregnant women.
The building which is located in the centre of the region would serve both north and south Essequibo and offers services in hardware, groceries and also haberdashery products.
In an interview with this newspaper, Imam Baksh, one of the co- business partners of the Bacchus family entity, said the Imam Bacchus business primarily emerged from the sale of rice. The business which started in the 1950s was manned by the now deceased Imam Bacchus, a rice farmer who came from Hamburg and resided on the Essequibo Coast.
The young Baksh said that his grandfather’s business gradually expanded into a general store over the years.
He further asserted that in late 1962, Guyana was experiencing a major 80-day strike and the District Commissioner Office at that time granted his grandfather the concession to volunteer for the distribution of goods. He said that is how his grandfather started out as a businessman.
With the new facility which offers a more efficient service, compared to the inefficiency at the former store, the business partners a wider display of their products, which includes a more computerised system and self-service.
He said that the modern facility would also shy away from the customary checking system which took up lengthy time and offered poor attendance to customers. The young Baksh noted that the old building has outlived its years of service.
He asserted that customers will be able to access both locally produced and foreign items. The Bacchuses who specialise in the manufacture of their local chowmein and plantain flour also rear meat birds on a large scale. They also grow their own vegetables and seasonings ingredients.
The supermarket is also an agent for National Flour Mill products, Western Union/Money Transfer/Bill Express and general merchants, hardware and haberdashery. It also offers free delivery for both wholesale and retail items.
Baksh also noted that the new facility was birthed with the customers in mind. At a simple ceremony, recently, the new state of the art facility was commissioned with family members present.
The supermarket, as part of its commissioning, will be giving back to its customers thousands of dollars in prizes. With the purchase of $10,000 and more a customer is eligible to win a motorcycle and a microwave each week.
At the opening, all children below the age of ten were also treated to a sample of the Bacchus blue ice cream.
