…charged with drunk driving
Yesterday, Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs, granted $10,000 bail to grass track motorcyclist Dwarka Gangadeen, called Dave, when he appeared at Vigilance Magistrate’s Court on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Outside the gates of the Vigilance Court compound, overseas-based relatives of Bridgette Gangadeen gathered to protest the charges instituted against Dwarka Gangadeen.
Some of the placards stated “Mother of three boys killed by father,” “Justice must prevail now,” “Where there is money there is no justice,” “ We are calling on the higher authorities for justice,” “ Woman murdered, killer set free why?”
According to one relative of Bridgette Gangadeen, the day before she died, there was a major fight between her and Dwarka Gangadeen which caused her to sustain various bruises about her body.
Relatives further said that Dwarka was placed on a two-year bond this year by the court after he brutalised her; however, he is left to walk as a free man.
Gangadeen was detained by the police about an hour after his wife’s mutilated body was discovered in front of the Vigilance Police Station. He was granted $100,000 station bail on Thursday.
The woman’s skull was crushed by the rear wheel of the truck her husband was driving after she reportedly opened the passenger door and fell out.
Police in a press release, immediately after the incident, had said that they were investigating a suspected murder, since it was believed that the woman was murdered and then dumped onto the roadway.
But from reports given by Gangadeen, the woman met her death after falling from the truck. But his actions after the tragic incident, gave rise to suspicions.
“He went home and took a taxi. If a man feel he run over something, especially your wife, you will normally stop and check. It’s not a dog,” a senior investigator told Kaieteur News.
The 30-year-old woman’s death ended 14 turbulent years of marriage. The couple had attended a nightspot in Enmore on Saturday night. While there, Dwarka Gangadeen received a call on his cellular phone. This aroused his wife’s suspicions and the couple began to argue. They eventually left for home where they continued their argument.
It is alleged that at around 02:00 hours on Sunday, Dwarka Gangadeen received a call from a friend to take part in an early morning fishing expedition in Enterprise, a few miles away. As he was about to leave the house with his Canter truck, his wife reportedly tried to prevent him, thinking that he was going to meet another woman. When her protests failed, she joined the truck leaving their two sons alone at home.
Despite his wife’s presence in the vehicle, Dwarka Gangadeen allegedly proceeded towards Enterprise all the while arguing with his wife. He told investigators that during the journey, his wife constantly threatened to jump from the moving truck.
As they approached the Vigilance Police Station the woman reportedly made good of her threat and after opening the passenger side door of the truck’s cabin, she jumped from the moving vehicle.
Her husband told detectives that he felt the rear wheel of his truck run over the woman’s body. However, he claimed that he panicked and drove away from the scene, leaving his wife clinging to life.
Dwarka Gangandeen said that after the incident he went back home and parked his Canter truck and then headed to Enterprise, where he hid until he was located by the police. When asked why he did not render any assistance to his wife who was obviously badly injured, he claimed that he panicked and went to his friends in Enterprise and tried to get them to go to the scene.
“I feel when I run over she but I panicked and call some friends fuh go and carry she to the hospital,” he told investigators.
But relatives of the dead woman are convinced that she was the victim of foul play and have called for a second autopsy.
