The University of Guyana (UG) is planning to hold several exhibitions showcasing the arrival of the different ethnic groups of the country.
Alim Hosein, Head of UG’s Department of Language and Cultural Studies made the disclosure yesterday during a tour of the exhibits at the campus’ library.
In addition to traditional “fireside” and coal-blackened pots, there were books on Indian history and cultures, fishing seines and the trappings of a long-ago cane-cutter, complete with cutlass and the yachting boots or “bush Clarks”.
The Art Department of Language and Cultural Studies, UG’s Hindu Society and residents of the community, have organized the exhibition Hosein disclosed.
“The exhibition in a general sense is celebrating the arrival of people to Guyana – the Amerindians, the Chinese, the Portuguese…everybody.”
While this exhibition is showcasing mainly things of India, the idea is that later this year, UG will also be honouring Emancipation Day, Amerindian Heritage Month and the Chinese New Year.
The theme for the UG exhibition is “Dis time na lang time”.
Meanwhile, lecturer Philbert Gajadhar noted that the books were from the UG Library, with equipment, tools, and other religious artifacts coming from students and the community.
He stressed that the idea is to expand and for the different occasions to host exhibitions pertinent to each occasion.
