Zeelugt residents peeved at ‘uncaring’ cow owner
Some of the cows gathering on the government reserve in front their owners’ premises.
Residents of Zeelugt South Housing Scheme West Coast Demerara are frustrated at what they call a health hazard, which is reportedly being caused by approximately 50 cows that traverse the area.
According to one resident, the animals’ owner has been rearing cows for ten years, and the atmosphere is always putrid with the smell of urine and faeces, since the cows in the area are kept on government reserve on the Old Road.
The resident claims that the owner of the cows does not sell any milk, hardly ever sells any cows, and is very abusive toward residents in the area when spoken to about the tremendous discomfort created by his animals.
“The cows are all over, he cannot contain them, and our neighbourhood is nasty.”
Another resident said that many complaints have been made to the NDC and the sanitary division of the Ministry of Health, however, it appears that either the relevant authorities are unwilling to help or the cow owner has some “connections” . Residents are in agreement that the area will soon be transformed into a “cow pasture.”
“We cannot go out in the afternoons and sit on the bridge because the area is really stink.”
When this newspaper contacted the NDC, an official stated that no complaints were lodged, while the sanitary division official stated there is no record of any complaint. However, residents are adamant that the NDC official is dishonest, as complaints were made on many occasions.
