Leading cyclist Alonzo Greaves will be aiming for a repeat when he defends the number one spot at the 28th Annual National Sports Commission (NSC) sponsored three-stage cycle road race set to pedal off on May 15 at Corriverton, Berbice.
This event is being held as part of commemoration programme in observance of Guyana’s 44th Independence celebrations.
Greaves, whose winning time last year was 6 hours 59minutes 38 seconds, has been in great form so far this year, will relish the challenge that will be posed by his competitors, the likes of Robin Persaud, Junior Niles and Warren Mc Kay among others.
A number of the riders have been overseas in the past weeks competing at the West Indies Vs the World Championships among others in Trinidad and they are expected to be back for this event will add more flair and competition to what is anticipated to be an exciting race.
On Saturday May 15, the race will pedal off from Corriverton at 07:30hrs to end at New Amsterdam, this first stage covering 46.6 miles (75km).
The second stage will be contested also on Saturday commencing from 14:30hrs at Rosignol, will cover 60.4 miles (96km) to end at Carifesta Avenue in the City.
The third and final stage will take place on Sunday May 16 moving off from Cara Cara in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden to conclude at Homestretch Avenue, a distance of 62 miles (100km). The overall distance is approximately 169 Miles (261km).
Organiser, National Coach Hassan Mohamed is reminding all cyclists that they are required to register next Wednesday, May 12, 2010 during normal working hours at the National Sports Commission office, 91 Middle Street. Registration is free.
In order to facilitate a smooth start to the event, the NSC will as normal, be providing transportation for cyclists and officials for the first leg on Friday May 14 which will depart the from the National Sports Commission office 91 Middle Street at 12:00hrs for Springlands, East Berbice.
Cyclists are also reminded that they must wear their club Jersey’s and present their license before the start of the event.
