The Editor,
The workers of City Council are being misled by the GLU under the leadership of its President Mr. Carvil Duncan.
No trade unionist worth his salt would tell the workers and or union membership under the banner of his union to strike, go slow or sit in without proper justification.
The City Council is in a cash strap situation and Mr. Duncan knows this; his first priority is to work closely with the council in order to get Central Government, to implement the various recommendations.
Mr. Duncan as the union boss should sit down with the membership of his branch and let them understand the council’s problem with Central Government and the subject minister in implementing those recommendations, instead of taking a position of a despot over the council, threatening to march all over Georgetown.
If the contractors can give the council time to garner cash, Mr. Duncan can surely help them to get monies due to the council unless there is a hidden agenda.
As for the Management Committee, which he is clamouring for, that too will suffer the same faith as the council, unless funds will be coming from somewhere which Mr. Duncan knows of and is keeping a secret
My advice to the workers of City Council is, in these circumstances do not be misled by any one.
The duty of any good trade unionist is to ensure that management is in a strong finical position always in order for his membership to benefit and this is what Mr. Duncan should be doing in the interest of the workers.
He has been at the helm of the union for some time now and should understand that the workers will always be there, but the leadership is subject to change.
