Motion of No Confidence in Nadir tabled again

Initially rejected by the Speaker of the National Assembly, the motion of No Confidence brought by the PNC/R against Minister Manzoor Nadir has been accepted after revisions and is now tabled for discussion in that forum.
On April 7, the PNC/R presented the clerk of the National Assembly with a Motion of ‘no confidence’ in the Minister of Labour Manzoor Nadir, however after review by the Speaker of the House Mr. Ralph Ramkarran the motion was rejected on the basis of its wording. The Speaker subsequently outlined a number of amendments that were required. Upon compliance the filing party would be allowed to resubmit.
According to Mr. Basil Williams of the PNCR, the revised Motion is now on the Order Paper for the next sitting of the House.
The Motion points out that the Labour Act and the Trade Union Recognition Act, Chapter 98:07 vests the incumbent Minister of Labor with responsibilities and powers to address matters of trade disputes and to protect the rights of workers.
It was also noted that the Government of Guyana is a signatory to International Labour Organisation (ILO) Conventions Nos. 87, 98, 135,154,158 and 163 which impose the obligation on the Government to protect and advance the rights and interests of Guyanese workers.
The sum of all these parts leads to the Minister of Labor having the power to inquire into the causes and circumstances of labour disputes.
He may also refer the matter to an arbitration tribunal for settlement consisting of one or more persons that he has appointed. This last with or without the consent of either or both parties.
