Today is Indian Arrival day and in commemoration of this auspicious occasion Guyanese, and more particularly East Indians, would be reminiscing on the long arduous journey of the Indians from their original homeland to this beloved land.
Members of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP), in recognition of this fact have organized an Open tournament, expected to be extremely competitive since the cream of the nation’s word formers are participating.
It seems as though Fred Collins has regained his old form judging from recent successes at the Tri-nation tournament staged in Trinidad and Tobago recently. The old master has defeated an illustrious bunch comprising some of the best players in the region and was duly declared individual champion. Abigail McDonald also participated in that tournament but was less successful. Nevertheless, she is expected to be the strongest challenge for Collins since she may feel that she has the psychological edge after dethroning him from national champion status.
Moen Gafoor is another decent player that has recently posed a headache to the top seeds. On his day, he can destroy the best in the game and his recent form has sent the ominous warning to the other competitors.
Add other names like James Krakowsky, the Murrays, Carlton and Yvonne, Lindener Grace Hercules and Ruby Cummings and the stage is well set for an exciting day on the boards.
The tournament will be staged at the Maltenoes Sports Club and competitors are reminded that the registration period commences at 09:30hrs. The first tile would be laid at 10:00hrs sharp and players arriving late would be forced to compete under a time constraint. The registration fee is a nominal $500.
