There is a time for every thing and that was so true when the Military and Para Military organisations in Berbice downed their weapons and other tools and engaged in a day of domino at the Central Police Station Recreational Hall.
Six organisations took part namely Police, Guyana Defence Force, Fire Service, Prisons, Neighbourhood Police and New Amsterdam Town Constabulary.
In the end after a day of keen competition the cops made sure that they made full use of their home advantage to arrest their colleagues to come out tops in the competition which was played recently.
The cops displayed good all round skills to destroy their opponents in the finals to run away victors with 86 games. Fire Service ran out of water as they came in second with 78 and Prison Services failed to come out of their cells ending in the cellar position with 74 games. The other three teams were knocked out earlier.
Policeman Quincy Calder was in a no nonsense mood scoring the maximum 18 games and was well supported by Detective Corporal Lennox Sears with 16 games.
The other member of the winning police team were Sergeant Forbes Brown, captain, detective Corporal Phillip Walters, vice captain, corporal Junior Vancooten and Adrian Angel.
At the presentation ceremony which followed immediately after the competition, the winning Police team was presented with a trophy and some DDL products while the Fire Service and Prisoner Officers teams were also presented with a trophy and DDL products. Constable Calder for his outstanding performance received the station sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan trophy.
Coordinator of the event Station Sergeant Jairam Ramlakhan told Kaieteur News that the competition is the start of a series of events being held to enhance the relationship among the military, paramilitary and the community in the Berbice region. This is the second domino competition held recently, the first, was won by civilians. He said that they will try to make this activity a regular affair.
The day’s activity was graced by senior officers of the various organisations some of whom participated in the competition including Assistant Superintendent of Police Clayton Castillo, Superintendent of Prison C. Hazel, Lieutenant Compton Flores of the Army, Cadet Officer Paul Persaud of the Fire Service, Chief Constable ASP Charles Roberts of the Constabulary.
