…crops, homes under water
For the fourth time this year, residents occupying the Sea defence dam at Cullen, Essequibo Coast, continue to be affected by the excessive hide tides. Residents who are being affected reported that waves from the high tide in the Atlantic Ocean have overtopped, washing away the sand and earth embankments. They also flooded several yards in both Cullen and Perseverance.
In the Unku Creek and Perseverance areas, Saturday morning, several houses and kitchen gardens were still under salt water. Residents recalled that they had experienced similar flooding in January, March, and again in late April, when waves overwhelmed the sand reef embankment and flowed into yards and low lying houses.
Many of these residents had no choice but to flee to higher grounds.
Cash crop farmer, Markey Peters, said that he is frustrated. “Every time there is high tide we are affected and we have nowhere to go; we have to stay in our homes until the water recedes.”
Peters noted that they have been affected for a week. Another resident said that he has erected permanent structures in the area and now governmental officials are advising them to relocate to Onderneeming.
He said that fishing is the main economic activity in the community. He also stressed that the community was facilitated with both electricity and road, but poor sea defence.
Another resident, Allan David, a fisherman, said that they enjoy living next to the seawall since they get to offload their catch much easier.
He said, “All we asking the government for is proper sea defence in our area.” This, he said, will curb the problem.
Many residents said that the high waves have caused the breach that was recently sealed by the Ministry of Public Works and Hydraulic in collaboration with the Region Two Administration.
When contacted, the Regional Vice Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo, said that in the face of the heavy high tides, Region Two is constructing revetments. Sea defence officials have also contacted the Ministry of Public Works and the team from there is currently working to reseal the embankment.
Samaroo noted that most of the people affected by the flooding are residing on government reserves and the Administration is therefore advising them to apply for house lots.
Villages such as Zorg, Good Intent and Devonshire Castle were also affected by the high tides.
