Alexander Street, and more particularly the Regent Street junction, Bourda, is often regarded as the livewire of downtown activities. This corner has seen brutal assaults, daring pickpockets and a drove of junkies who seek refuge on the pavements around this particular street at nights.
Maybe, it is for this reason that the top brass of the Guyana Police Force has ensured a regular police presence in the area.
Yet amidst all the efforts of the Force, the action around this junction continues with absolute impunity.
A few weeks ago a young woman was left counting her losses following a daring robbery that left her without her prized gold chain.
At another time, it was a hapless young man who was relieved of his wallet; his only sin being to venture near Alexander Street.
In all fairness to the police, they responded favourably after the last incident where this newspaper highlighted that a woman was assaulted and relieved of a piece of gold jewelry.
Immediately after the article appeared in this medium, armed patrols were sent out to patrol the corner. It seems though, that the bandits are one step ahead of the cops.
Yesterday afternoon the armed police crew was noticeably absent, replaced by two policewomen (armed with walkie talkie), the armed ranks apparently at another location, when two men, one brandishing a pistol, swooped down on Royal Woodworking and relieved a man of an undisclosed amount of cash.
Employees at the store related that the victim is a salesman who delivers doors to the business place.
He had just completed a transaction and was standing by the door when the bandits struck.
They poked the gun in his face, took his bag and calmly walked away. The men then reportedly entered a car parked further up Alexander Street and made good their escape.
The police arrived after the bandits had vanished and conducted preliminary investigations.
They then invited the victim to the Brickdam Police Station where they took statements. Shortly afterwards, Royal Woodworking decided to close up for the day.
