Today the Department of Language and Cultural Studies, School of Education and Humanities, will be hosting two presentations on Brazilian culture.
The Brazilian film ‘Macunima’ will be shown today at 17:00 hours at Castellani House. According to the University of Guyana, Macunima is a Brazilian satirical comedy based on the book of the same name – the hero with no character, by the modernist writer Mario de Andrade.
The film was produced in 1969, during the Military Regime in Brazil. De Andrade offers a broadly amusing critique of racial stereotypes.
The story unfolds as Macunima (Grande Otelo) is a lazy whiner from the moment of his birth.
His magical transformation into a white man (Paulo José) does nothing to change his nature, but has a tremendous effect on how others see him.
At the end, the once-fortunate man sits alone as he tells his story to the only creature who will listen, a parrot.
In addition, a lecture will be given by Professor Miguel Nenevé on Tuesday, May 4 at 17:00 h, at the same venue.
