Omai boat mishap…
Police have recovered the bodies of two of the missing miners who drowned during last Thursday’s boat mishap in the Essequibo River.
The remains of Norman Newton of Squatting Area Blue Berry Hill, and Junior Nurse, of Leonora, West Coast Demerara were found on Saturday.
Police sources said that the bodies were brought to Georgetown.
However, a search party comprising relatives of the missing men returned to Linden yesterday after finding no trace of the third missing man, who has been identified as 29-year-old Sherwyn Haynes of One Mile Wismar.
Reports state that the vessel carrying the Captain, Rondell Fraser, and seven passengers, was in the vicinity of Omai when it began to rain heavily.
The boat began to take in water and eventually sank some 18 metres from the shore.
Five of the passengers managed to swim to land.
The survivors then realised that Nurse, Haynes, and Newton were missing.
There are reports that Haynes became exhausted after assisting his wife to the shore.
Kaieteur News understands that most of the passengers were miners who were coming from the interior when the mishap occurred.
Police said that boat Captain Rondell Fraser of Victory Valley, Wismar, was detained for questioning at Mabura.
There are reports that none of the passengers had life-jackets.
