.now attempting to strangulate private media – Kissoon
“In Guyana today, we have seen the emergence of an elected dictatorship characterised by fascist features which leads one to the conclusion that the regime in Guyana can and should be classified as the most degenerate, undemocratic, racist and corrupt administration in the entire history of the British West Indies.”
This is according to political activist, Frederick Kissoon, in his address to the recently held Guyana Trades Union Congress May Day rally where he presented his analysis of what he called the deliberate ploy to demolish the trade union.
Kissoon told the gathering that history has shown that as soon as fascism consolidates itself it attacks three sections of the society, namely the political parties, the media and the trade union movement.
He posited that as it relates to the political parties, it was not necessary for the government to act there, given the fact that political parties in the opposition have self-destructed.
As it relates to the media, he said that the pressure is relentless, “From forcing channel 28 into economic ruin to constant pressure on CN Sharma to withdrawal of ads from Kaieteur News and Stabroek News, the aim of elected fascism in this country is to strangulate the private media.”
As it relates to the demise of the TUC, Kissoon said there is a conspiracy by the ruling elites to denude the TUC of its resources, undermine its membership and kill it off, adding that the purpose of the Jagdeo regime is to bring the society under its complete hegemony and thus establish total control over Guyana.
He added also that the elites want to extirpate the TUC because it cannot buy it off and they feel the TUC is implacably opposed to them.
“The blueprint laid out on the alter of power about three years ago is to elevate FITUG to replace the TUC…The plan is to have two major unions take over the entire labour environment —GAWU and the Guyana Labour Union…NAACIE will be an appendage to GAWU and CCWU will be sacrificed because the dictators are unsure of its sustained loyalty.”
Kissoon said that over the past year, the state has used its resources and its muscles to implement the grand design.
“The GPSU has been defunded and an opposing body formed to represent senior public servants. GAWU is being thrown upon workers without their consent ….A pro-government movement claiming it is organising lecturers at UG has begun and its intention is to oppose the UGWU, a member of the TUC CCWU is facing ostracization from places like NCN and the Pegasus Hotel.”
Kissoon warned the union leader and members that, “we must act to change our country for the better.…I put forward to the TUC today that it is wishful thinking to believe that the present leaders of government will pursue shared governance or inclusive trade unionism.”
He said that if trade union rights are to be restored then it must accept the reality that an evil dictatorship is incapable of understanding the virtues of life.
