Some of the nation’s top amateur boxers turned in credible performances and vindicated the view that the sport is on the rise when activities in the third ProAm boxing card continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue Saturday evening last. Really, it should have been five instead of the normal four bouts but the featherweight encounter between Ray Sandiford and Stephon Gouveia was cancelled after it was revealed the Gouveia was not in training.
Gouveia’s absence certainly did not damper the proceedings as the other eight boxers compensated with spirited performances that behoove well for the sport. In the first bout in this segment junior flyweight, Akeem Alexander, representing the Linden based Bauxite Bombers Boxing gym unleashed a two fisted attack on Republican Damion Ross and comfortably won a unanimous verdict.
Nankumar Singh, the Republican that was adjudged best boxer after he captured the lightweight title in the just concluded Novices championships seemed to have lost his way in his bout against Clairmonte Gibson (GDF). Clearly, the better boxer of the two, Nankumar aborted the polish that has won him the best boxer award and resorted to senseless swings that were way off their mark. He was also guilty of lunging at his opponent and can count himself lucky that Gibson lacked the kind of conditioning to counterattack. Nankumar eventually prevailed over the soldier to retain his winning streak.
His gym mate, Trelon Munroe was not so fortunate. He spent most of his fight pursuing Romeo Norville (HE) but failed to capitalize when he caught up with him. Norville rocked him with several telling combinations throughout the bout and was declared the winner at the end of the one sided contest.
Earlier in the night, Natasha Ashby employed superb boxing tactics to defeat Amanda Norville in their female lightweight encounter. Ashby danced and jabbed, at times pausing briefly to deliver her combinations to her opponent’s body and head. To her credit, Norville did put up some resistance in the early parts of the bout but the rounds elapsed she found the going extremely tough and offered little resistance towards the bottom of the fight.
At the end of the proceedings, as in the other editions, all of the boxers received large food hampers compliments of furniture giants, courts. Representative of that organization, Pernell Cummings performed the honours while reminding the boxers of his entity’s commitment to their development.
