Wisburg Secondary won the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Memorial 2nd annual football championship which culminated Friday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden.
Wisburg Secondary beat Christianburg Wismar Secondary 1-0 in the final. The lone goal of the game was scored in the 50th minute by Gary King Gomes after he collected a pass from Michael Wilson from close range.
Wisburg Secondary players dominated the presentation after the final which was witnessed by representatives of the Edward ‘Screw‘ Richmond Foundation out of New York which included its president Ernest Joseph, first vice president Sammy Griffith and Board Members Compton London and Richard Thompson.
Best Goalkeeper Leonard Wilson, Best Midfield Player Michael Wilson, Best Defender Kelvin Spencer and Most valuable Player Shawn Allicock and coach Bevon McCalmon, who received the ‘Screw’ Richmond Trophy for his school, were all rewarded.
Allicock collected the Malcolm ‘Mali’ Cummings Memorial Trophy, from Ernest Joseph, on behalf of the late Cummings’ family, who donated the trophy in honour of the former national youth player.
The third place game was won by Mackenzie High School who scored a 1-0 overtime win against Linden Foundation Secondary.
Before the final Joseph, speaking on behalf of the New York-based organization said they were committed to the foundation. They promised to work very hard in the coming years to make this foundation and this tournament the biggest and best ever seen locally.
The tournament was organized by the Education Department of Region 10 in collaboration with the Edward ‘Screw’ Richmond Foundation, in honour of the first player from Linden to have don senior national colours.
