When true champions collide, the battle always goes down to the wire and in this case it was certainly no different when the final of three pulsating days of rivalry in the 2009 Guyana National Rifle Association Fullbore Rifle Shooting Championships ended yesterday at the Timehri Rifle Ranges, Yarrowkabra, Linden Soesdyke, Highway.
Veteran Ransford Goodluck who trailed his old rival and buddy, National Captain Mahendra Persaud by 2 points going into the final day, pulled out all the stops to emerge as the overall champion when he won the final day with a total of 133 points and 13 V-Bulls winning two of the three Ranges while recording a possible of 50 points and 6 V-Bulls at the 600 Yard Range. At 500 Yards, Goodluck recorded 34:4 and at 1000 Yards his scores read 49:3.
Taking the O Class title was Lt. Col. Terry Stuart who recorded a final day score of 122:9 winning at all three ranges, 500 (34:2), 600 (46:5) and 1000 (42:2).
Taking the runner-up position ahead of Mahendra Persaud on the final day was Dane ‘Spooky’ Blair who recorded more V’s than his Captain 11 to 6, both tallying the same points, 127.
Peter Persaud took the runner-up position to Stuart in the O Class with an overall total of 118:5. The other shooter who recorded a possible on the day was Ryan Sampson who achieved 35:2 at the 500 range to edge out Goodluck.
Conditions on the final day were very challenging with the winds changing and very tricky. With that in mind and competitors having to pay keen attention to the challenges at hand, experience played a major hand in deciding who would come out as victor.
Team training ahead of the Caribbean Championships set for Barbados later this month will begin today at the same venue. Referred to as a Postal Shoot, team members will be testing their abilities at the 300, 500 and 600 Yards Ranges in the West Indian and Canada Cups which is also done by the other countries who will compete at the West Indies Fullbore Championships.
The scores are then forwarded to the Secretary of the West Indies Fullbore Council, Guyanese Ryan Sampson, with the winners being announced at the Championships later this month.
Following is the full details of the final day of the GNRA 2009 championships.
