The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association’s (GABA) development thrust continues under its President Steve Ninvalle and team of executives with planned competition for Under-15 and Junior boxers.
Speaking to Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Ninvalle disclosed that GABA has planned to start a national Under-15 and Junior boxing competition from May 16 at the Andrew ‘Six head’ Lewis Gym in Albouystown. This programme will continue with events every month, Ninvalle informed.
Ninvalle, who is the Parliamentary Secretary with in the Ministry of Sports, stated that this move is intended to have young Guyanese boxers properly prepared as they look ahead to fielding a suitably prepared team to the 2012 World Championships. He also opined that once they (GABA) keep nurturing a nursery then Guyana will get good amateur fighters that can make the country proud.
Boxing coaches Sebert Blake and Wincel Thomas, who is the National Coach, have the responsibility of looking at and selecting Under-15 boxers from around the country for the monthly event among other planned activities.
Meanwhile, an international flavour Goodwill boxing tournament could be held here sometime in June once all goes according to plan. Ninvalle told Kaieteur Sport that he has dispatched letters inviting the sister associations of Trinidad and Tobago, St Lucia, Barbados and Jamaica to the Goodwill tournament here in June. He stated that this will serve to further expose the local fighters to top flight regional opposition to aid their preparation.
This move of hosting the Goodwill event was prompted after Trinidad, who was scheduled to stage a similar event next month, was forced to cancel due to their General Elections being staged close to the time for the staging of that tournament. Ninvalle noted that they decided to pick up the baton and host the event. By the end of the week it will be known whether the territories invited have accepted the invitation.
Ninvalle said that this kind of competition would be good for the young fighters as they prepare for CAC and Commonwealth engagements later this year.
As GABA focuses of a structured and sustained development programme, Ninvalle informed that the response has been extremely favourable, noting that the Private Sector and government have been supportive. He singled out the positive encouragement and support offered to date from Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony and Director of Sport Neil Kumar.
Michael Parris’ Olympic bronze medal is the best Guyana has achieved in boxing to date, as a matter of fact it is the best in any sport, and GABA is keen to make a concerted effort as the London 2012 Olympics loom. Ninvalle has expressed the desire to leave no stone unturned in an effort to effectively prepare the best local amateur fighters with the aim of improving on Parris’ 1980’s achievement.
While it has been acknowledged that it will not be done overnight, no effort would be spared to ensure proper preparation for local boxers.
The call is also being made for widespread support to ensure the desired success.
