– two arrested as police suspect murder
Two youths from the Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara have been taken into police custody following the discovery of a man’s body in a canal in the area.
Reports are that the battered remains of 57-year-old Inshan Ally called ‘Indian’ was pulled from a canal at around 6:45 hours on Friday. This newspaper was told that the man was last seen alive on Wednesday.
A woman who took care of Ally, Vidwattie Goberdan, said that she last saw Ally alive on Wednesday around noon.
“He went home here; he did dancing whole morning and then he lef, and he nah come home back, because he does sleep hay and come fuh he lil food,” the woman related. She added that Ally worked at a koker in the area and never had any enemies.
“He was friend with every body and he and no body ain’t got problems…after me ain’t see he come home Wednesday night, Thursday I start asking about fuh he but nobody ain’t see he.”
The woman said that on Friday morning her neighbour received a call saying that a man’s body was seen floating.
According to Goberdan, she and her neighbours went to the canal and upon seeing the man’s face they immediately recognized him as Ally.
“When we reach I see the person face and right away I know was ‘Indian’. He ain’t had on no clothes… and like dem beat he bad. And dem do he da thing,” Goberdan said.
According to persons who witnessed the body when it was removed from the canal, the man’s tongue was hanging out of his mouth.
Meanwhile, residents of the area said they are of the opinion that the man was beaten and sodomized. One resident said that it is highly unlikely that Ally would go to bathe in the trench.
“He does go home and do everything. Me ain’t understand how he end up without clothes,”
The dead man’s sister, Basairan Basdeo Naraine, who lives in La Grange, told this newspaper that she last saw he brother some three months ago.
The woman who is a re-migrant said ever since she returned to Guyana she had been pleading with her brother to come live with her.
“He does sleep by a woman in Goed Fortuin and she does cook for him. He come by me and I tell he stay because, he ain’t got no children nor wife…but he always refuse.”
Two men from the area, identified as ‘Squakes’ and ‘Fifty’ have since been detained and are assisting with investigation.
In the meantime the police are awaiting the results of post mortem. The body will be exhumed on Monday to facilitate the post mortem.
The body had to be buried in a shallow grave because of its advanced stage of decomposition.
