GDF march forward after dramatic shootout
With last year’s champion, Pele FC out of the championships, the Mayor’s Cup football extravaganza will witness the ascension of a new champion but even the most ardent fan is unable to definitively say which team will assume this position.
To date all the big name teams have been dumped from the reckoning. Alpha United, touted as the most talented team in the tournament was fed a huge chunk of humble pie when that team faced off with Riddim Squad Friday evening.
Riddim Squad, led by the Hope clan ensured Alpha joined Camptown and Pele on the sidelines when they beat them on penalty kicks. The two teams had played out a 0-0 stalemate at the end of regulation and extra time forcing the kicks. Alpha missed two of their attempts from the spot as Riddim Squad held their nerve to score and advance to the semi-final round and the money 5-3.
Riddim Squad went into the match as the underdogs and many football buffs were already anticipating the ‘pounding’ they would have endured from the ‘Hammers.’ Undeterred, the Riddim Squad players held their nerves and completed an impressive outing, not allowing in any goals while they did not score to force the game to the penalty spot.
The other quarter-final game Friday saw the Guyana Defence Force hanging on in a spirited contest against Uprising to win on Sudden Death penalty kicks, 9-8 the eventual score line. The game was knotted at 1-1 after regulation and extra time.
Norde McDonald (25) put Uprising ahead in the keenly contested encounter, while GDF equalised in the second half, 57th minute, through Ryan Adolphus.
The remaining quarter-finals are fixed for Wednesday at the GFC starting at 6:00pm. Santos will take on Seawall FC of the West Demerara, while BK International Western Tigers will be up against Fruta Conquerors.
This encounter is a highly anticipated battle but the Conquerors team may feel somewhat emasculated in the absence of their star striker, Manasseh Primo who is reportedly in Suriname. They will depend on their other stars, the likes of Jolyon Harry, Jomo Hinds and Mustapha Hack to lead them into the next stage of the competition. Add central defender, Neville Stanton and Oswald Cornette and the ‘juicy’ team would feel confident of moving on to the next stage.
The Tigers, though would be riding high after lifting the last edition of the Kashif and Shanghai tournament. Dwayne Ali will most likely be the man to lead the attack with support from other players the likes of Sherman David, Ryan Thomas, Nedd Fraser and Colin Nelson among others.
While the pundits would have their wagers placed on their favourite team, the Riddim Squad humiliation of ‘The hammers’ may serve as a timely caveat that anyone could claim the spoils on their night.
Wednesday’s matches promises to be interesting and keenly contested. Attractive cash prizes awaits the winners.
