Dear Editor,
I must admit that I’m not a scholar, a sheik, maulana, Al Hajj or hold any of the accolades or offices that purport to speak on behalf of Islam. I’m only a servant of the creator, trying to do right.
In Sunday’s editorial, (Kaieteur News 25th April, 2010), it was stated and concluded and I quote, “we are talking about a new paradigm as to how the male should view his relations with others – especially females – in his quest for sexual satisfaction. The old paradigm, articulated either implicitly or explicitly in some religious texts that the role of the woman is to ‘satisfy’ the needs of the male will just have to go.
“This might present a challenge to those that take a literal interpretation of these texts as the authority for their actions and we hope that such objections will be articulated and addressed openly in the coming months. We all need to be reading from the same page on the question of sexual offences. The religious bodies not only have to accept SOB2009; they will have to become its most vigorous advocates since it is their teachings that form the foundation of most moralities.”
Firstly and most importantly, Islam (the Quran and the Sunnah) are all pronouncements from Allah, the Creator, “All knowing All wise” and has been completed, perfected and chosen as the only way of life of humankind. This final will, testament and guidance of mankind ceased with the physical demise and removal of our beloved prophet(s) Muhammad.
It is the Muslims’ belief therefore and logically so that nothing from the intellect of men – how well intended can change, substitute, or take precedence over it. So irrespective of old or new paradigm if its not supported by the Quran or the Sunnah, then I or no practicing Muslim have to accept SOB2009 much less be its advocate; as concluded.
Further, there is no part of the Quran that implicitly or explicitly states or insinuates that woman’s purpose is to “satisfy” the needs of her mate. Contrary, the Quran and the Sunnah are replete with injunctions, prohibitions, suggestions, advices and examples of how to establish and maintain healthy and wholesome family units.
Everything about Islam concerns Allah (T) and our relationship to Him (T). We are all created for one purpose only and that is to worship Allah (T).
The family unit and its system of specialisation and division of labour provide each member of that family to fulfill his/her purpose (of worship) by adapting certain roles.
The role of the woman is to be a good muslimah, wife, mother, partner, supporter, comforter and example to her off-springs.
It was at least (and I hope not last) admitted that it is the teachings of religion that form the foundation of most moralities.
Why then ask the “faithful” to abandon their existing precepts, which have served mankind from its creation to adapt ways being made law by man who is limited, short-sighted and narrow-minded in their understanding of the human kind.
The “manual” for the preservation of morality has already been written.
It is therefore much easier and more in keeping with nature to adhere to the creator’s plan and not try through trial and error to replace Allah’s will with the limitedness of man/woman confused mine.
