Two men who claim to be living at the same address were remanded to prison after being charged with robbery under arms.
The duo, Zaman Mohammed and Basil Balgobin, made their appearance at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton.
It is alleged that on Monday, April 26, last, armed with a gun, they robbed Naresh Mahadeo, of a cell phone valued $7,000. The incident occurred at Edinburgh, West Coast Demerara.
The charge was indictable and the duo was not required to plead.
It is also alleged that on the same day they held Mahadeo, a security guard, at gun point and robbed him of one hydraulic pump, valued at $3.5M, one starter worth $150,000 and two batteries valued at $60,000.
The men’s lawyer, William Sampson, in his bail application told the court that his clients both live at lot 32 Annandale and are labourers. He said as far as he knows his clients have no previous conviction and they have every intention to return for their trial once bail is granted.
However bail was objected to by the prosecutor, Shellon Daniels. She told the court that Mohammed currently has a simple larceny charge pending in the Vigilance court. She added that the address, which the police have for one of the accused, does not correspond. Bail was refused and the men will make their next court appearance on Monday at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s court.
