Dear Editor,
I write to congratulate Mr. Freddie Kissoon for his piece, “Sexual fascism in Guyana: Maniacs in the corridors of power” (Kaieteur News April 25, 2010). The article exposes a deep, dark under-belly of a certain class of people that few will dare to write about openly.
I salute you for taking a stand for the voiceless victims and their scared families. It is a great shame that people who are apparently connected to political power in Guyana can get away with such immoral activities. Reading such sexual violation of powerless young ladies is extremely shocking.
I was extremely saddened when I read this: “There is this well known figure in the Hindu religion who did crazy things to his innocent secretary. I will live with the regret that I didn’t save that girl’s life. I see her image in front of me now – petite, small visage, long, flowing, curly hair and the look of innocence…If ever this government changes hands, I will walk this entire country demanding the prosecution of this aging religious hypocrite.” I was sad for the innocent secretary. I was sad to read of the other illustrative examples you provided. People of moral conscience would be disturbed and would support all calls for justice to be served.
Mr. Kissoon, I am sure that if you start a campaign to demand justice for the innocent secretary and the others who have been sexually violated, people will join such a struggle. You should not wait for the government to change. These violations should be documented and you should write a book so that others would know about them and become enraged.
I may not agree with some of your writings, for example your coinage of “elected dictatorship” and calls for opposition street protests, but I have great respect for what you do. You are a brave man Mr. Kissoon. The people of Guyana, including the Indian people, whom you tend to blame for supporting the current government will shower praises upon you for taking a stand against sexual violations of young girls and women in the country.
Ideas such as “elected dictatorship: will remain ideas and street protests will drive more Indians into the tentacles of the PPP, but taking a stand for innocent victims who have been sexually violated will bring great respect to you.
