Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes bared his fangs at Theophilus King and subsequently threatened to out his lights when the fighters scheduled to participate in the Guyana Boxing Board of Control’s Friday Night fights scheduled for the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Saturday May 1 next, convened for a live press conference at the National Telecommunication Network (NCN) studio yesterday afternoon.
The two were not the only pugilists to trade caustic words as Michael DeMattos and Laurex Benn also flew at each other’s throats. Not to be outdone, James Walcott boldly promised to deal with Kwesi Jones in their junior/middleweight encounter while Pauline London dispatched a missive to Sharon Ward who was a no show at the forum.
“I’m not taking anything away from King but there can only be one winner in this fight and that will be me,” professed Gilkes. “I am taking this fight so seriously that I will declare that Gilkes would not be around for the third bell,” retorted King. “I would prefer not to predict an outcome but if a knockout comes I will gladly take it,” responded Gilkes.
DeMattos has had a reasonably solid amateur career but inexplicably took a prolonged hiatus from the sport. He is now back and despite losing his return bout to Joel McRae, feels that he has what it takes to upset Benn. “After the bout is over we would still be friends but sorry Laurex during the fight we will be enemies,” DeMattos warned. Benn simply chuckled and promised to do everything in his power to destroy DeMattos’ plans.
James Walcott has spent most of his time recently tutoring the young amateur boxers of the Harpy Eagles Boxing Gym to perfect the art of the sport. He will attempt to give them a practical display of the intricacies of boxing when he dons gloves against Kwesi ‘Assassin’ Jones.
Interestingly, Jones had rechristened himself from a sobriquet bestowed upon him by his mother and what he refers to as demeaning, ‘Mommy Nice Boy.’ He suffered a humiliating defeat to Edmond DeCleau and decided that the attachment to his name was responsible for his ill fortune. After changing the demeaning sobriquet to the more threatening ‘Assassin’ he returned to avenge the DeCleau loss. He is creeding similar luck against Benn.
Pauline London was all alone at the forum since Ward was unable to travel from her Linden base. The boxing officials explained that Ward had experienced transportation problems. London did not believe them and referred to the absence as fright. That did not prevent her from declaring that the Lindener would feel the brunt of her power. “This is for you,” London proclaimed while pointing an arrow straight right hand to the camera.
President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool was very upbeat about the card and so too was GBBC executive, Trevor Arno. Boxing buffs would not want to miss out on the action. Weigh in is set for tomorrow night at the Water Chris Hotel, Waterloo Street, Georgetown and the action on fight night gets underway at 20:00hrs sharp.
