Twenty two-year-old Royden Benn called ‘Royden Daniels’ or ‘Dougla man’ of Angoy’s Avenue (Cow Dam) and formerly of Pomeroon was on Wednesday refused bail by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo when he appeared before her at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on three charges of violating his seven-year-old stepdaughter.
The man is charged with carnally knowing the girl between Tuesday 1st and Thursday 31st December 2009 at Angoy’s Avenue.
Another charge read that between the same dates and at the same place, he buggered the girl. The final charge read that last Thursday, April 22, at Angoy’s Avenue, he again had carnal knowledge of the child.
In court he was not required to plead and Prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram opposed bail on the grounds that the defendant, who is not from the area, and was only living there for the past three years, is likely to flee the jurisdiction if granted pre-trial liberty.
Kaieteur News understands that the girl lives at the home with her mother, three other siblings and the accused.
The court was told that the man would usually send the child to purchase marijuana which he and her mother would smoke. After they would have finished, the mother would become ‘high’ and Daniels would then take advantage of her seven-year-old daughter amidst threats.
This newspaper also understands that the girl told her mother what had happened and she was given a sound beating with a piece of wood with a nail on the end, which caused wounds to her body including her head.
Relatives later saw the discomfort of the child and when questioned, she revealed the shocking details of her ordeal.
The matter was reported and the culprit who told the court that he is a contractor was arrested.
It is understood that Benn told investigators that he would only send the girl to buy the wrapper to put the marijuana inside and nothing else.
Kaieteur News understands that the mother is wanted by the police for some earlier misdemeanours, including possession of ammunition. However they are contemplating their next move in terms of arresting her since she has a less than one-week-old baby.
Meanwhile, Benn’s next court date is set for May 24 in New Amsterdam.
The matter is engaging the attention of the Social Services Department.
