Afghanistan warmed up for their opening match against inaugural ICC 20/20 World Cup winners India on Saturday in St Lucia with a convincing 5-wicket win against fellow ICC qualifiers Ireland in their practice match at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday.
Ireland, who lost to Afghanistan in the final of the qualifying tournament for a place in the 20/20 World Cup, reached 133-9 off their 20 overs after slumping to 32-5 at one stage as the Afghans showed their win in the United Arab Emirates earlier this year was no fluke.
Afghanistan lost two wickets before they reached 30 but recovered to reach 135-5 off 19.3 overs off with Mohammad Asghar, who struck 2 sixes and a four from 37 balls in his unbeaten 40, Mohammad Nabi who hit 2 fours and 2 sixes in 28 and Skipper Nowroz Mangal who made 27 with a four and 2 sixes, leading the way.
Teenage left-arm spinner George Dockrell again bowled well to take 2-23 from 4 overs and got support from Alex Cusack (2-12 from 2) for the Irish in a losing cause.
Pacer Dawlat Ahamadzai bowled with good control to take the first four Ireland wickets and finish with 4-15 from his four overs in sunny conditions.
Ahamadzai removed Skipper William Porterfield with the 2nd ball of the contest before Ireland , who lost all three of their matches at Providence in the 2007 World Cup, had scored.
The pacer then held a stupendous one-handed catch off his own bowling to get rid of Paul Sterling (6) in his next over to leave the score on 10-2 before taking two more wickets as he sliced through the top order.
John Mooney who clobbered 42 from 33 balls with 3 sixes and 2 fours offered a late order rally but Gary Wilson (32), Trent Johnson (16) and Niall O’Brian (14) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures on a good track and lush green outfield.
Hamid Hassan (2-30 from 4 overs) supported with the ball for Afghanistan who only played their first ODI last year when they beat Scotland by 89 runs in South Africa. Ireland will face host West Indies in their opening match from 17:00hrs on Friday in the first Day/Night International match to be played in Guyana.
