Dear Editor,
Student violence in schools in Guyana seems to be a growing culture among many disruptive elements today. What is really happening is that some parents of students in certain schools have little or no control over their children. Some of these very violent students are already using drugs either knowingly or unknowingly by their parents or verbally abuse them at the time.
The education authorities need to hire more welfare officers and guidance counselors and pay them well too. They must visit the schools where the children are not so academically inclined because they are the ones more prone to violence than schools where there are high fliers. The visit should be carried our at least three times per week and those students who are giving problems in school should be subjected to counseling over and over until it has been noticed that their negative behaviour and attitude towards their peers, teachers and academic studies have changed,.
It is no wonder that some children behave like hooligans, abusing teachers and peers. It is because some of the parents do not even talk to their children at home on a daily basis. They think that they can leave that to the teacher. However, many teachers are strained with other work and often have little time to counsel. That is where the welfare officers and guidance councilors are needed.
It is a known fact that too often only when there is violence involving students and teachers that the welfare officers visit the schools.
This should not be. Things need to change. Let it happen sooner rather than later when something might happen and it may be very serious.
