Several of the country’s top amateur pugilists have been selected to the national team as the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) prepares for several international tournaments.
Coach of the Guyana Defence Force, Terrence Poole, also the coordinator of bouts have recently disclosed that GABA is preparing its best boxers for overseas engagements starting with the Central American and Caribbean Games in Puerto Rico in July. GABA will also be fielding teams to the Commonwealth Games in India in October. Otherwise, the boxers would also participate in two impending domestic tournaments, the National Intermediate and the National Open championships soon.
Those called up for national duties are Dillon Allicock, Orlando Allicock, Dexter Jordon (FYF), Ray Sandiford (Police), Clairmonte Gibson, Clevon Rock, Bert Braithwaite and Edwin Richards (GDF), Aubrey Moore (Essequibo), Damion Ross, Trelon Munroe (Republican), and Troy Billey (Bauxite Bombers).
The boxers assembled at the National Gymnasium on Monday 26 last where they were debriefed before commencing training sessions. Sessions are now ongoing starting at 17:00hrs daily.
The boxers would also convene at the National Park at 05:00hrs in the morning for roadwork and conditioning sessions. Several coaches would oversee the training sessions including Poole, Sebert Blake, Wencel Thomas, Carl Graham and Carl Franklyn.
